Pareto front

Illustration of a turning tool and bar stock

I studied precision turning of AISI 1045 steel with in-process sensing and tool-wear prediction. I searched 648 cutting settings for the best balance of surface finish, speed and tool life, and then stress-tested my own answer.

What

I did

01

Collected 180 development runs on 10 inserts.

02

Kept 60 test runs on 4 other inserts.

03

Compared learned models with a physics baseline.

04

Built the Pareto front and picked a knee point.

+ Honest result

Where it fell short

The physics baseline matched the learned models, and the remaining tool life was off by about 1.5 minutes. All 31 Pareto points sit at the smallest depth of cut. My knee point was chosen in only 3% of weighted draws, so I recommend the neighbouring region instead of that single point.
